IRISH GUINNESS BROWN BREAD

Guinness can be added to both savoury and sweet recipes such as Cakes and an array of breads. Here it is used to make a very easy dark wholemeal bread.

Ingredients: IRISH GUINNESS BROWN BREAD

  • 300g (2 and a half cups) Wholemeal Flour
  • 150g (1 cup) Plain Flour
  • 1 tbsp Bread Soda
  • 1 tbsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 285ml (2 cups) Guinness
  • 2 tablespoons Black Treacle
  • 1 Egg

Method:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 200°C / 400°F
  2. Sieve all the dry ingredients into a large bowl, tipping any remaining wholemeal flakes left in the sieve straight into the bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, treacle and Guinness.  Mix well.
  4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add in the wet ingredients.  Stir together until combined (the mixture will appear quite wet).
  5. Place in a loaf tin, lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake for 1 hour (reduce the temperature slightly if the crust looks very dark).
